Safer Sleep: The Foundations Every Parent Should Know

When you're a new parent, it's easy to feel overwhelmed by the amount of advice available online. As an infant sleep consultant, one thing I'll never compromise on is safe sleep.

While my role is to help families build healthy, independent sleep habits through a responsive, comfort-led approach, every sleep plan starts with making sure your baby's sleep environment follows current safer sleep guidance.

Here are some of the most important recommendations:

  • Always place your baby on their back for every sleep, both day and night.

  • Use a clear cot or Moses basket with a firm, flat mattress and fitted sheet.

  • Keep the sleep space free from pillows, duvets, cot bumpers, soft toys and sleep positioners.

  • Share a room with your baby for at least the first six months.

  • Dress your baby appropriately for the room temperature and avoid overheating.

As parents, we all want to do what's best for our little ones. The good news is that creating a safe sleep environment doesn't need to be complicated. Small, consistent choices at every sleep can make a real difference.

At Nurtured to Sleep, I believe that safe sleep and responsive sleep support go hand in hand. My personalised sleep plans are designed not only to help your little one develop confident sleep habits, but to do so in a way that always puts their wellbeing first.

If you're feeling unsure about your baby's sleep, you're not alone. I'm here to provide clear, personalised guidance that helps you feel confident every step of the way.

For the most up-to-date safer sleep advice, I always recommend visiting The Lullaby Trust, the UK's leading authority on safer sleep for babies.
